Well, we've had two weeks of school and it's been great. The boys and girls are getting used to our routines and things are running along smoothly. We started homework assignments last week and you should find the homework to be manageable. Students are asked to read 15 minutes each night and then record this in their reading log. On Friday of each week we will be looking for 60 minutes of reading time in total. Students will also have a comprehension and/or math practice activity each week. Students are encouraged to manage their time and can turn in the homework book on Friday.
We were lucky to have a trip to the Sculpture Saint John site last week. The two grade 4 classes were taken on a tour and were able to view sculptors and interns at work. There was an opportunity to ask questions. After our tour, the children used their new sketch books to sketch one or more of the sculptures. Surprise surprise, I had my group sketch the sculpture from The Netherlands! This week we will be having a visitor from Scotland who is in Saint John for the Stonehammer Geoparks Conference. We are looking forward to this presentation which will take place on Wednesday. Have a super week!

Wow...what a wonderful day we had in Grade 4! I was so excited to meet all of my students. I know that we are going to have an awesome year.
Today we spent some time discussing routines and the Island View Code of Conduct. Students brainstormed ways that we can Be Respectable, Be Responsible and Be Safe. This group of boys and girls spent their day showing me just how awesome they were in all of these areas! We had our first music class with Mrs. Dick today. Tomorrow we will have our first gym class with Mr. MacMurray. We also welcomed our new EA, Mrs. Marr into our classroom today. Thank you to everyone who sent in their school supplies. Today you should check for 6 notices that were sent home....these include a note from me, a registration form to be check ed, our Computer User Agreement, our Violent Threat/Risk Assessment letter and our Information for Dismissal due to Inclement Weather notice. Tomorrow, information will come home about the school calendar, allergies and other important information. Welcome to Mrs. Ruigrok's Grade 4 Class. I am excited to be working with your children this year. We will have a fantastic year and I am looking forward to teaching your child, as well as growing, learning and sharing with them. I am pleased to be returning to Island View School. Last year, I taught grade 4 at Champlain Heights School, for the three years prior to that, I taught grade 2 at Morna Heights School. Prior to that, I taught grade 4 for two years at Island View and also taught other grades at IVS...including a job share in grade 1, science in grade 3 and grade 4.
